$339 million in historic investments will be rebuilt and bridges across Hawaii strengthened

HONOLULU (KHON2) – Hawaii will receive $339 million over five years, including $67.8 million in 2022, from federal funds to repair state bridges in disrepair.

“This historic investment will help rebuild bridges across Hawaii and make them safer and more resilient for all,” said Brian Schatz, U.S. Senator from Hawaii.

According to reports, about 84 bridges in Hawaii are in poor condition and need repairs.

According to Schatz, 100% of the funds can be used to repair and refurbish local off-system bridges owned by local authorities. Normally, state or local funds should have supplemented federal funds by up to 20%.

The federal funding comes from the Department of Transportation’s newly launched bridge replacement, rehabilitation, preservation, protection and construction program. The program was signed by the last November 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Act approved by Congress.

Schatz said all U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico will have a combined budget of $5.3 billion in fiscal 2022. This makes the program one of the largest bridging investments.
