77-year-old dies after three vehicles collide near Makapuu

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A 77-year-old woman is dead after a three-vehicle collision on the Kalanianaole Highway, according to the Honolulu Police Department (HPD).

The collision occurred around 6:40 p.m. on Thursday, January 27 near Makapuu and Sea Life Park.

The 77-year-old woman was driving a Toyota sedan southbound on the Kalanianaole Highway. HPD reported that for unknown reasons, she crossed the double solid yellow lane marker and side-swept a Toyota pickup truck that was going north.

The Toyota sedan then drove on and collided head-on with a Honda sedan being driven by a 75-year-old woman, who was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

The 77-year-old was also taken to hospital in critical condition, police said, but succumbed to her injuries and was later pronounced dead. The driver of the Toyota pickup was an 18-year-old woman who was unharmed.

This collision prompted the Closure of the Kalanianaole Highway in both directions between both entrances in Sea Life Park.

The Honolulu Police Department added that speed did not appear to be a factor in this collision; However, it is currently unknown whether it was drugs or alcohol.

This is Oahu‘s third road fatality in 2022, compared to five concurrent in 2021.
