HONOLULU (KHON2) – The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced that the recovery of a cargo plane dropped in the waters off Kalaeloa will begin in October.

The NTSB dispatched a team in July to conduct an initial investigation into which they were able to retrieve floating debris. Investigators located the wreck on the ocean floor at depths between 350 and 450 feet. However, due to the depth, they were unable to dispatch divers to retrieve the flight data and cockpit voice recorders.

The plane broke into two parts, one with the cockpit and the other with the wings and tail. The NTSB said both engines disengaged on impact and the wreck is about two miles from Ewa Beach.

“The TransAir Flight 810 wreck contains vital investigative information, including that captured by the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder,” said NTSB Chairman Jennifer L. Homendy. “Access to the recorders, motors and other components will be critical to understanding not only how this accident happened, but also how future accidents could be prevented.”

The Transair aircraft was en route to Kahului on July 2 when it reported anomalies in both engines shortly after taking off from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. The pilots parked the plane and were able to escape. They were later rescued by the US Coast Guard.

A research ship with remote-controlled vehicles and a barge with a crane are used for the rescue. The entire operation is expected to take 10 to 14 days and is expected to begin on or around October 9th.
