For those who want to spend time away from Mickey, Minnie and their friends to enjoy all that the island of Oahu has to offer, there are also many stunning public beaches.

One of them is Kalama Beach in Kailua, Oahu. Known for its beautiful water and “powder white sand”, Kalama Beach is a popular destination for Aulani guests as it is only about 30 minutes from Disney Resort.

Recently, Anela Rezentes, a six-year-old girl visiting Oahu with her family, encountered a frightening situation while visiting the beach. She was “hysterical” after being “kicked” by a shark while swimming in the Pacific Ocean. According to one report to the incident:

Her mother was only a few meters away and took a video of her playing in the waves. When Anela ran up to her in tears and said there was a shark, her mother was incredulous.

“When she came out of the water, she was hysterical,” Sheri Gouveia said [Honolulu news station] KHON2.

“I was like oh my god. So I ran up but I was looking for it but couldn’t see it. I didn’t know it was actually a shark. That shocked me.”

The shark was eventually discovered to be a blacktip shark, which is usually shy and feeds on fish in shallow water. However, the above report was careful to note that the situation could have escalated if the shark felt threatened.

Luckily, Anela and her family members are all unharmed after their shark encounters this summer, but it’s a good reminder for all Aulani guests to exercise caution when traveling to the beaches on the island of Oahu during their vacation in paradise.
