Matthew Micah Wright / Getty ImagesA former NBA player was among two Californians arrested in Hawaii after police said the couple uploaded fake COVID-19 test results to the Hawaii Safe Travels portal.
All travelers to Hawaii must have negative tests for COVID or undergo a mandatory 10-day quarantine period prior to flying to the islands. According to Kauai Police, Lazar Hayward Jr., 34, and Raven Randle, 33, flew from Los Angeles on an American Airlines direct flight Tuesday. Upon arrival at Lihue Airport, their pre-submitted COVID test results were flagged by the Hawaii Safe Travels system.
Authorities believe their test results have been falsified to avoid quarantine, and Hayward and Randle have been detained for improper falsification. They were released pending an investigation by the Hawaii Attorney General’s investigative department and have since been flown back to Los Angeles.

According to the Attorney General’s office, violating Hawaii’s COVID travel mandates will result in a sentence of up to a year in prison, a fine of up to $ 5,000, or both.
Hayward was the 2010 Minnesota Timberwolves first-round draft pick from Marquette. He only played one season for the Timberwolves, averaging 3.8 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. He was traded to Oklahoma City in 2011 and played one more season, again with Minnesota, before retiring in 2013.
When Randle was reached by the Associated Press on Friday, he declined to comment.
