Hawaii has 2 new coronavirus-related deaths, 126 additional infections

Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported two new coronavirus-related deaths and 126 new confirmed and probable infections across the state, bringing the state’s total since the pandemic started to 891 deaths and 83,832 cases.

The most recent deaths have occurred in Oahu. No further information was initially available on the most recent deaths.

The state’s official coronavirus-related death toll includes 670 deaths on Oahu, 113 on the island of Hawaii, 93 in Maui, nine in Kauai, one in Molokai, and five Hawaiian residents who died outside the state.

The U.S. coronavirus-related death toll is over 741,000 today and the nationwide number of infections is more than 45.7 million.

Today’s new confirmed and probable infection count by island includes 47 new cases on Oahu, 38 on the island of Hawaii, 22 in Maui, nine in Kauai, one in Molokai, and nine Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

State health officials have added likely infections to the total number of cases. Likely infections include people who have never received a confirmatory test, but who are believed to have had the virus based on their known exposure and symptoms, or a positive antigen test.

The total number of confirmed and probable coronavirus cases by island since the outbreak began is 57,694 in Oahu, 11,002 in Hawaii, 9,492 in Maui, 2,595 in Kauai, 241 in Molokai and 144 in Lanai. There are also 2,664 Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

Health officials also said today that of the total number of infections in the state, 1,710 cases were considered active. Officials say they consider the infections reported in the past 14 days to be a “proxy number for active cases.” The state’s total number of active cases is down by 23 today.

By island, Oahu has 964 active cases, Big Island has 412, Maui has 178, Kauai has 148, Lanai has three, and Molokai has five.

The latest COVID-19 vaccine round-up from Hawaii says 2,165,978 doses of vaccine had been administered through state and federal distribution programs as of Wednesday, 9,213 more than the previous day. Health officials say 71.1% of the state’s population is now fully vaccinated and 80% have received at least one dose.

Of all confirmed cases of infection in Hawaii, 4,696 had to be hospitalized, with 14 new hospital admissions reported today.

Twenty-four hospitalizations in the total statewide were Hawaiian residents diagnosed and treated outside of the state. Of the 4,672 hospital stays within the state, 3,668 were on Oahu, 537 on Maui, 390 on the Big Island, 67 on Kauai, five on Lanai, and five on Molokai.

According to the Hawaii COVID-19 Data Dashboard, the state’s average positivity rate over 7 days is 2.1%. The average seven-day case number for Oahu is 66 and the average positivity rate over seven days is 1.9%, state health officials said today.
