Hawaii records 6 new coronavirus-related deaths, 5,977 additional infections

Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported six new coronavirus-related deaths and 5,977 new confirmed and probable infections statewide, bringing the state’s total since the pandemic began to 1,123 deaths and 166,008 cases.

The most recent deaths were recorded on Oahu. No further information was initially available on the recent deaths.

Today’s case count sets a new daily record, breaking a previous high of 4,789 set on Jan. 6.

The state’s official coronavirus-related death toll includes 825 deaths on Oahu, 159 on the island of Hawaii, 106 on Maui, 20 on Kauai, 2 on Molokai, and 11 Hawaiians who died outside the state.

Investigators with the Hawaii Department of Health determine the vaccination status of each positive case after the fact, which is why these statistics are not included side-by-side in the daily case counts, officials previously said.

The US coronavirus-related death toll today surpasses 849,000 and the nationwide infection count is nearly 65.2 million.

Today’s newly confirmed and probable infection count by island includes 3,985 new cases on Oahu, 913 on Maui, 720 on Hawaii, 266 on Kauai, 23 on Molokai, 20 on Lanai and 50 Hawaiians diagnosed out of state.

State health officials have included probable infections in the total number of cases. Likely infections include people who have never received a confirmatory test but are thought to have had the virus based on their known exposure and symptoms or based on a positive antigen test.

The daily infection record usually comes from cases reported to the state two days earlier.

The total number of confirmed and probable coronavirus cases by island since the outbreak began is 118,177 on Oahu, 17,576 on Hawaii, 18,794 on Maui, 6,283 on Kauai, 630 on Molokai and 306 on Lanai. There are also 4,242 Hawaii residents who have been diagnosed outside of the state.

Health officials also said today that of the state’s total number of infections, 47,823 cases were considered active. Officials say they are looking at infections reported in the past 14 days as a “proxy number for active cases”. The state’s total number of active cases rose by 2,909 today

By island, Oahu has 35,179 active cases, Big Island has 4,162, Maui has 5,849, Kauai has 2,240, Molokai has 253, and Lanai has 140.

According to the Hawaii COVID-19 Data Dashboard, the state’s average 7-day infection count is 3,657 and the average 7-day positivity rate is 20.1%.

The median seven-day case count for Oahu is 2,664 and the median seven-day positivity rate is 20.7%, state health officials said today.

The latest COVID-19 vaccine summary for Hawaii says 2,630,811 vaccine doses have been administered through state and federal distribution programs through Friday, up 4,607 from the previous day.

Health officials say 75.1% of the state’s population is now fully vaccinated, 80.8% have received at least one dose, and 29.4% have received a third dose.

Of all confirmed Hawaiian infection cases, 5,419 required hospitalization, with 11 new hospitalizations reported today.

Thirty-one hospitalizations in the statewide total are Hawaii residents who were diagnosed and treated outside of the state. Of the 5,388 hospital admissions in the state, 4,113 were on Oahu, 660 on Maui, 491 on the Big Island, 108 on Kauai, 11 on Molokai, and five on Lanai.
