Hawaii sees 255 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 78,404 nationwide

Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported 255 new confirmed and probable coronavirus infections, bringing the state’s total since the pandemic started to 78,404 cases.

No new virus-related deaths were reported today, so the nationwide death toll from COVID-19 remains at 757.

The state’s official coronavirus-related death toll includes 573 deaths in Oahu, 84 in Maui, 86 in Hawaii, eight in Kauai, one in Molokai, and five Hawaiian residents who died outside of the state.

The U.S. coronavirus-related death toll is over 688,000 today and the nationwide number of infections is more than 42.9 million.

Today’s new confirmed and probable infection count by island includes 162 new cases in Oahu, 17 in Maui, 32 in Hawaii, 33 in Kauai, four in Molokai, and seven Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

State health officials have added likely infections to the total number of cases. Likely infections include people who have never received a confirmatory test, but who are believed to have had the virus based on their known exposure and symptoms, or a positive antigen test.

The total number of confirmed and probable coronavirus cases by island since the outbreak began is 54,541 in Oahu, 9,000 in Maui, 9,889 in Hawaii County, 2,215 in Kauai, 139 in Lanai and 222 in Molokai. There are also 2,398 Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

By island, Oahu has 3,949 active cases, Big Island has 874, Maui has 510, Kauai has 414, Lanai has two, and Molokai has 39.

Of all confirmed cases of infection in Hawaii, 4,249 had to be hospitalized, with 20 new hospitalizations reported today.

Twenty hospitalizations in the total statewide are residents of Hawaii who have been diagnosed and treated outside of the state. Of the 4,229 hospital admissions in the state, 3,391 were on Oahu, 470 on Maui, 318 on the Big Island, 42 on Kauai, five on Lanai, and three on Molokai.

The average seven-day case number for Oahu is 230 and the average positivity rate for seven days is 4.8%, state health officials said today.
