Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported seven new coronavirus-related deaths and 201 new confirmed and probable infections across the state, bringing the state’s total since the pandemic started to 833 deaths and 81,087 cases.
Five of the most recent deaths have occurred in Oahu and two in the Big Island. No further information was initially available on the most recent deaths.
The state’s official coronavirus-related death toll includes 630 deaths on Oahu, 88 in Maui, 101 in Hawaii, eight in Kauai, one in Molokai and five Hawaiian residents who died outside the state.
The U.S. coronavirus-related death toll is over 710,000 today and the nationwide number of infections is more than 44.2 million.
Today’s new confirmed and probable infection count by island includes 126 new cases in Oahu, 19 in Maui, 39 in Hawaii, seven in Kauai, one in Lanai, and nine Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.
State health officials have added likely infections to the total number of cases. Likely infections include people who have never received a confirmatory test, but who are believed to have had the virus based on their known exposure and symptoms, or a positive antigen test.
The total number of confirmed and probable coronavirus cases by island since the outbreak began is 56,213 in Oahu, 9,241 in Maui, 10,391 in Hawaii County, 2,380 in Kauai, 140 in Lanai and 232 in Molokai. There are also 2,490 Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.
Health officials also said today that of the total number of infections in the state, 3,544 cases were considered active. Officials say they consider the infections reported in the past 14 days to be a “proxy number for active cases.” The state’s total number of active cases is down by 200 today.
By island, Oahu has 2,337 active cases, Big Island has 643, Maui has 305, Kauai has 245, Lanai has one, and Molokai has 13.
The latest COVID-19 vaccine round-up from Hawaii said 2,065,666 vaccine doses had been administered through state and federal distribution programs as of Thursday, 5,950 more than the day before. Health officials say 69.3% of the state’s population are now fully vaccinated and 77.5% have received at least one dose.
Of all confirmed cases of infection in Hawaii, 4,477 had to be hospitalized, with 33 new hospitalizations reported today.
Twenty hospitalizations in the total statewide are residents of Hawaii who have been diagnosed and treated outside of the state. Of the 4,457 hospital admissions within the state, 3,544 were on Oahu, 499 on Maui, 347 on the Big Island, 58 on Kauai, five on Lanai, and four on Molokai.
The average seven-day case number for Oahu is 125 and the average positivity rate for seven days is 3.0%, state health officials said today.
