Hawaii sees 74 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 83,522 nationwide

Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported 74 new confirmed and probable coronavirus infections, bringing the state’s total since the pandemic started to 83,522.

No new virus-related deaths were reported today, so the nationwide death toll from COVID-19 remains 888.

The state’s official coronavirus-related death toll includes 668 deaths on Oahu, 112 on the island of Hawaii, 93 in Maui, nine in Kauai, one in Molokai and five Hawaiian residents who died outside the state.

The U.S. coronavirus-related death toll is over 738,000 today and the nationwide number of infections is more than 45.5 million.

Today’s new confirmed and probable infection count by island includes 36 new cases in Oahu, 19 in Hawaii, two in Maui, 12 in Kauai, and five Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

State health officials have added likely infections to the total number of cases. Likely infections include people who have never received a confirmatory test, but who are believed to have had the virus based on their known exposure and symptoms, or a positive antigen test.

The total number of confirmed and probable coronavirus cases by island since the outbreak began is 57,548 in Oahu, 10,933 in Hawaii, 9,460 in Maui, 2,554 in Kauai, 239 in Molokai and 142 in Lanai. There are also 2,646 Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

Health officials also said today that of the total number of infections in the state, 1,679 cases were considered active. Officials say they consider the infections reported in the past 14 days to be a “proxy number for active cases.” The state’s total number of active cases is up 14 today.

By island, Oahu has 960 active cases, Big Island has 419, Maui has 175, Kauai has 119, Lanai has two, and Molokai has four.

The latest COVID-19 vaccine round-up from Hawaii said 2,152,849 doses of vaccine had been administered through state and federal distribution programs as of Monday, 6,605 more than the previous day. Health officials say 71% of the state’s population is now fully vaccinated and 79.7% have received at least one dose.

Of all confirmed cases of infection in Hawaii, 4,664 had to be hospitalized, with seven new hospitalizations reported today.

Twenty-four hospital stays in the total statewide were Hawaiian residents diagnosed and treated outside of the state. Of the 4,640 hospital stays within the state, 3,651 were on Oahu, 526 on Maui, 386 on the Big Island, 67 on Kauai, five on Lanai and five on Molokai.

The average seven-day case number for Oahu is 69 and the average positivity rate for seven days is 2.1%, state health officials said today.
