Hawaiian Electric Co. urges Oahu residents to save electricity tonight after multiple generators fail

Oahu‘s flood warning has been extended to 10.15 a.m. tonight.

The National Weather Service reported that Oahu continues to experience flooding from excessive rainfall.

Radar tonight showed heavy rain over Oahu. Rain fell at a rate of 1 to 5 inches per hour and congestion has been reported on the island.

A flood warning for Oahu is in effect until 7:15 p.m.

At 5:10 p.m., radar data indicated that heavy rain was pouring over the island from the south. Heavy rains will hit urban Honolulu all the way to Ewa Beach and then spread over the rest of the island

Sunset, said forecasters. Rain fell at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

Minor flooding on roads, poor drainage areas and in streams is expected to occur across the island.

In the event of persistent flooding, the consultation can be extended beyond 7.15 p.m.

Hawaiian Electric Co. urges Oahu customers to conserve electricity between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. after shutting down multiple generators or reducing capacity, including the island’s largest generator, according to a tweet.

“We are currently assuming that there will be enough electricity available to cover the evening peak, mainly due to the below-average demand on New Year’s Eve. Saving energy by the public can help ensure that sufficient electricity is available, ”the tweet said.

Hawaiian Electric recommends keeping cooking to a minimum, turning off or turning down the air conditioning, disconnecting power to the Christmas lights, delaying hot showers, laundry, and dishwashing.

There was no schedule as to when the power generators would resume.

4:15 p.m.

Remaining flood warnings for Maui and Molokai were canceled at 4:13 p.m.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather warning for the island of Hawaii that runs from 6:00 p.m. tonight through 6:00 a.m. Saturday.

On the Big Island, temperatures are expected to drop in areas above 13,000 feet, resulting in a mixture of rain and snow. Weather forecasters said the snow accumulation will be up to an inch.

If you want to drive in affected areas, you should be prepared for slippery road conditions and limited visibility.

A flood warning for Maui is in place until 4:40 p.m., while the Molokai warning has been extended to 5:15 p.m.

“At 3:07 pm, the radar was showing spotty moderate to heavy showers over the slopes of Haleakala, falling at a rate of about 1 inch per hour,” the National Weather Service’s Maui advisory said. “These showers have decreased slightly as a separate series of showers clears west Maui.”

Maui counseling includes Kihei, Kula, Keokea, Pukalani, Makawao, Keanae, Kipahulu, Kaupo, Haliimaile, Nahiku, Huelo, Haiku-Pauwela, Ulupalakua, Wailea, Pauwela, Paia, Makena, Puunene, Hana and the Haleakala National Park.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Molokai due to excessive rainfall, which is valid until 3:15 p.m.

At 12:15 p.m. the radar indicated heavy rain at a rate of 1 to 5 inches per hour over and around Kaunakakai and Hoolehua. The rain will sweep across the island this afternoon and all of Molokai is expected to experience flooding, forecasters said.

Meanwhile, the message for the island of Hawaii was extended to 3:15 p.m. after radar showed that heavy rain continued to move over the Puna district and into the South Hilo district. At noon it rained at a rate of 1 inch an hour.

The National Weather Service has canceled the flash flood warning for Kauai.

Both lanes of the Kuhio Highway near the Hanalei Bridge, which was previously closed due to flooding, are now open, according to district officials advising motorists to continue to exercise caution on all roads.

Meanwhile, a flood warning has been issued for the island of Hawaii due to excessive rainfall, which is valid until 12:15 p.m. today.

“At 9:09 am, the radar indicated heavy rain moving over the southeastern slopes of the Puna district and spilling into the Hilo and Puna districts. The rain fell at a rate of 1 to 5 inches per hour and is expected to last all morning, ”said the consultant.

The Kauai flood warning has expired, but a flash flood warning for the north coast of Kauai will remain in effect until 9:30 a.m. due to previous heavy rainfall, the National Weather Service said.

“At 8:08 am, the water level at the Hanalei River Bridge shows that the increased water levels are falling and that there are only few rain showers on Kauai. The Kauai Emergency Management reports that the Kuhio Highway on the Hanalei River remains closed, ”the updated warning reads.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a flash flood warning for the north coast of Kauai through 9:30 a.m. today.

“At 6:26 am, the Hanalei River level reported a rapid rise in water levels, although rainfall has decreased upstream, and Kauai Emergency Management reports that the Kuhio Highway on the Hanalei River has been closed,” said the Warning.

Areas where flash floods will occur include Princeville, Hanalei, Wainiha, Haena, the Alakai Swamp Trails, Na Pali State Park and Kalihiwai, forecasters said.

The Kūhiō highway near the Hanalei Bridge is closed due to flooding, district officials said. Further road closures and landslides are possible.

Much of Kauai is also under flood warning until 8 a.m. today.

Advice includes Lihue, Kapaa, Princeville, Kilauea, North Fork Wailua Trails, Wailua Homesteads, Wailua, Hanalei, Omao, Alakai Swamp Trails, Lawai, Anahola, Moloaa, Wainiha, Koloa, Haena, Poipu, Kokee State Park, Na Pali State Park and Wailua River State Park.

And Big Island peaks are subject to a winter weather warning until noon.

The weather service says there can be accumulations of up to 2 inches (5 cm) of snow, with the possibility of freezing rain or a mixture of rain and snow.

The New Year’s forecast for the state calls for southerly winds that will bring showers especially over the western islands.

According to forecasters, there is little risk of thunderstorms even until Saturday morning.
