Keith Hayashi assumed the position of interim superintendent of the Hawaii State Department of Education on August 1. The Hawaii State Board of Education named Hayashi as interim superintendent in June after outgoing superintendent Christina Kishimoto announced that she would not seek a renewal. Hayashi will take on the role until the board elects a permanent replacement.

“I feel humble and honored to have been selected to lead our public school system during this transition,” said Hayashi in a statement released by the Ministry of Education. “This is such a critical time for the department and I am committed to liaising with our schools, complex departments and state office heads to ensure we are well prepared for the coming school year.”

At the time of his appointment, Hayashi was the director of Waipahu High School, a position he has held since 2009. This is the second time Hayashi has served as an interim superintendent; Previously, he held the interim function in July 2017, before the Executive Board appointed Christina Kishimoto to the position. Hayashi also served as the state’s deputy superintendent from March to June 2017.
