Question: We have just returned to Hawaii from Florida. The “preliminary clarification” from Hawaiian Airlines at their gate in Orlando was a godsend! An agent checked our vaccination cards, IDs and QR codes, put an orange bracelet on us and off we went! When we landed in Honolulu there was a separate line for passengers with wristbands like us, and we passed hundreds of other people without stopping just like we would have done before COVID. Do other airlines do the “pre-clear” thing too? Honestly, I can’t imagine how people could start their Hawaii vacation by queuing for two hours!

reply: Yes, Hawaiian, United, Alaska and Southwest airlines offer pre-clearance for passengers flying to Hawaii to travel safely, although this may not be possible from every departure location. Pre-clearance can make it easier for returning residents as well as tourists to arrive on the islands.

As you described, before boarding the plane to Hawaii, passengers using this service will be given a wristband indicating that they have completed the Safe Travels program requirements. After landing, they go straight to baggage claim or ground transport.

We have heard from fellow Honolulu residents that they are pleased that pre-authorization was offered on their flight home. Aside from making it easier for them to get out of the airport, they said it was comforting to see so many fellow travelers wearing wristbands, which meant they tested negative for COVID-19, got vaccinated in Hawaii, or otherwise on arrival from were exempt from quarantine.

Passengers who have not received pre-approval must line up after landing in Hawaii to verify that they have met the safe travel requirements.

Q: Are all Oahu satellite city halls now open on Saturdays?

A: No, four out of nine locations are. “The Downtown, Hawaii Kai, Pearlridge, and Windward City satellite town halls offer extended service hours on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to serve customers who need to renew their driver’s license, driver’s license, or government ID card. No other satellite town hall services are offered during these special Saturday hours, ”according to the Honolulu Department of Customer Services.

Appointments are recommended and can be arranged via the AlohaQ system at alohaq.org. Standby service is also available but not guaranteed.

All Oahu satellite town halls and driver license centers will be closed on Monday due to the July 4th holiday.

Q: People who register as unemployed have to look for three jobs a week and record their contacts in writing. However, online postings often don’t list a specific person to apply to, or sometimes even the name of the company; it’s more about the nature of the work. How do we log this?

A: Print a copy of the job posting and your job posting application and keep it in your written contact log as per the State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

Q: Is there a phone number for people who do not speak English and have questions about the vaccine?

A: Yes. To connect with a translator, call 586-8332 or the toll-free number 833-711-0645. According to the Ministry of Health, this service is available Monday to Friday from 7.45 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.

Mahalo

Mahalo to the person who dropped my Visa credit card at the Enchanted Lake Safeway in June. I couldn’t believe I was so lucky that you found it! You restored my trust in the people. I really hope that something wonderful will happen for you and that your good deed will return to you ten times. Mahalo nui! – MJM
