Two Maui residents, one from Lahaina and another from Wailuku, died early Saturday morning in unrelated vehicle accidents.

A 51-year-old man from Lahaina, riding a 1998 Suzuki Bandit S1200 motorcycle, was thrown out of his vehicle at around 12:11 p.m. and hit by an oncoming SUV, Maui police said in a press release.

The man was traveling south at high speed on the Honoapiilani Highway near Kekaa Drive when he lost control of the motorcycle and was thrown onto the road. He slid into opposite lanes where he was hit by a white 2020 Toyota RAV4. The man who was not wearing a helmet died on the scene.

The motorcycle continued to slide 375 feet before coming to a stop on the north shoulder of the freeway, police said.

A 57-year-old woman from Lahaina who drove the Toyota and three passengers, also from Lahaina, were buckled up and were not injured. Airbags did not deploy as a result of the collision.

Police said speed is viewed as a factor in the accident, and vehicle homicide investigators are investigating whether drugs or alcohol were also involved.

In another incident, a 32-year-old Maui man died after being thrown from his moped today.

The accident occurred near Komo Ohia Street in Wailuku at around 1:45 a.m., Maui police said in a press release.

According to a preliminary investigation, a 2013 Sanyan moped driver was traveling northwest on Kehalani Mauka Parkway when he lost control of the vehicle and repeatedly collided with the road’s raised curb. The driver was thrown from the moped and thrown onto the road.

As the police announced, the driver, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene.

The publication did not disclose whether other vehicles were involved in the fatal collision.

Maui Police Department investigators are investigating whether speed, alcohol, or drugs played a role in the accident.

Maui County recorded two road fatalities in 2022.
