HONOLULU (KHON2) – In September a new exhibition at Honolulu Art Museum (HoMA) opened with the title ‘Hawaii Now artist, ‘and it’s an exhibit that explores some of the most pressing issues of the time and place in Hawaii.
KHON2 explored the inside to learn more and was accompanied by one of the exhibition’s co-curators, Marlene Siu.

It’s fascinating when a project like this new exhibition comes about; Not only is it for display, but there’s a purpose that really drives it. KHON2 asked Siu to tell us what this exhibition is about and what guests can expect.
“HoMA’s major fall exhibition features 13 world-class site-specific artworks by 18 Hawaiian artists,” said Siu. “You will find a wide range of media in this exhibition. From new technologies to more traditional practices like textiles and ceramics. And you will also find that all the work here speaks of exploring questions of our time and our place. “
The exhibition is a great thing to have and touch in each of these pieces. KHON2 then asked Siu: What is an example and how does this piece add to this urgency?
She said a great example would be a play by Jennifer Goya:
“It’s a piece that asks the audience to physically engage with the piece by stepping on these floor sensors. And when you step on the floor sensor, you will see the display change on the monitors. And so you will have a different experience from each sensor, and what this piece really sensitizes is Rapid ‘Ohi’a Death and the cultural and ecological meaning of’ Ohi’a Lehua for Hawai’i and visitors to really ask about her to think about personal commitment to nature conservation, â€explained Siu.
Each piece has a “call to action” for guests. KHON2 also asked Siu: What as a whole – as a museum – is the bigger “appeal†for the guests when they leave this exhibition?
“The larger ‘call to action’ would be the first for visitors to come and experience these works as a starting point – to really delve into these various issues that affect Hawaii and our global community, and then see that these are issues” not separate, they are all connected in some way.

“So this exhibition would be a starting point for them to try to find out more about how they could get involved with various partners who have worked with artists on this exhibition,” said Siu.
‘Artists of Hawai’i Now’ opened on September 16 and will last until January 16, 2022 this year.
Starting next week, however, the museum is offering a range of public programs that only expand on the topics covered in this exhibition – from artist talks to workshops to community forums.
