HONOLULU (KHON) – Have you ever been to a sunflower field?

Usually, Corteva farms in Waialua open their fields to visitors from all over the world to enjoy this beautiful view.

However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, they were unable to safely admit visitors.

“The last time we did the public sunflowers was in 2019. We had over 20,000 people in 10 days, actually closer to 25,000,” said Laurie Yoshida, communications manager at Corteva Agriscience in Hawaii. “We raised over 50,000 for nonprofits and then for COVID so we couldn’t have sunflowers in 2020 or 2021.”

Yoshida said they decided to bring these beautiful flowers to people virtually and so far it has been a huge success.

People can log in from their smartphones and walk through the sunflower fields from the comfort of their own home.

“So we tried to be creative and get the sunflowers into the church, and we know that it is not the same when people hide in it and take pictures,” Yoshida said. “But that way you can enjoy the beauty and the 360 degrees.”

Yoshida said they have been planting sunflowers here on Oahu for more than 20 years and hopes they will have the opportunity to invite the public again next year.

But in the meantime, she says, it will be enough to offer this virtual event.

“There are no costs and we will leave it indefinitely for the time being,” said Yoshida.
