Oahu Transit Services brought the website back online for TheBus on Monday, restoring vehicle locations in real time for passengers to track their journeys while work on restoring email servers continues.
A cyber attack on December 9th, which targeted OTS, disabled the online servers for both administrative and operational access for TheBus and TheHandi-Van, the city’s transport ministry said.
While most of the resources related to the operation of TheBus and TheHandi-Van have been restored, the email servers remain down. All e-mails sent to addresses with the ending @ thebus.org have not been received since the first attack, the city said.
The career page on the www.thebus.org Website is currently also not accepting applications. The Bus Pass Office in the Kalihi Transit Center will remain closed.
Passengers can again find GPS-based real-time locations for their journeys at hea.thebus.org for TheBus and eva.thebus.org for TheHandi-Van.
Real-time location information should also be available for mobile applications, including Transit, Moovit and DaBus, DTS said.
Efforts to recover from the overt ransomware attack are continuing, and city officials are working with transportation companies in other US cities that are being attacked by hackers.
City information technology officials suspect the attack was the work of hackers linked to Russia. The FBI, Honolulu Police and US intelligence agencies are still investigating the incident.
The FBI’s Honolulu division declined to comment on Monday, citing the ongoing investigation.
