The Hawaii baseball team opens the series with a win at UC San Diego

    University of Hawaii’s Nainoa Cardinez scored on May 12 against the Cal State Northridge Matadors.

Nainoa Cardinez hit a home run for a 3-on-4 win and Blaze Koali’i Pontes continued his success as a starting pitcher as the University of Hawaii baseball team in La Jolla, Calif., secured a 7-4 win over UC San Diego won.

Improving to 16-9 in league play, the Rainbow Warriors set their first winning record in 10 seasons of Big West membership. The ‘Bows have five Big West games left.

Since being promoted to the No. 1 catcher after injuring DallasJ Duarte at the end of the season, Cardinez has hit a .364.

Cole Cabrera’s two-run homer gave the ‘Bows a 2-0 lead in the first inning. In UH’s two-run runner-up, Cardinez scored and eventually scored on Jordan Donahue’s single as shortstop.

Cardinez made it 7-4 on his second home run of the season in seventh place.

Pontes dished out six hits and allowed four runs in six innings to improve to 4-0 as a starter. With six starts, Pontes has a 2.15 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP.

The Tritons loaded the bases with an out in the ninth. But Dalton Renne replaced Buddie Pindel and introduced the last two outs.
