The Hawaii legislature passes legislation introducing automatic voter registration

The Hawaii state legislature passed legislation Tuesday to enforce automatic voter registration.

The bill, if signed by Gov. David Ige (D), will require all ID card and driver’s license applications to include a voter registration application.

The legislation stipulates that ID card and driver’s license applications will not be processed unless people have completed their voter registration.

In addition, applicants have the option to decline changes to their names and addresses for vote registration purposes before they are automatically updated.

According to West Hawaii Today, the measure passed the Democrat-controlled Senate and House with ease. The bill will now be sent to Ige’s desk and will come into effect on July 1st when signed.

Democrats have pushed for automatic voter registration in several states against the opposition of many Republicans.

More than 15 states across the country offer automated voter registration through a number of agencies, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Last month, former Vice President Al Gore (D) called for all US citizens to be automatically registered to vote after Georgia lawmakers passed a controversial new election law.
