Video: Natalie Gochnour by Kem C. Gardner on Utah’s post-pandemic economy – State of Reform

Natalie Gochnour, executive director of the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute, was one of the speakers on the afternoon keynote at the 2021 Health Policy Conference in the state of Utah last week. The veteran economist spoke to DJ Wilson, moderator of State of Reform about how Utah’s economy will look in the future.

She described the economic “rebound” that Utah is currently in. Increased vaccine delivery is bolstering consumer confidence, businesses are better adapting to operating during COVID-19, and many Utahns have accumulated excess savings — and with it, “demand backlog.” – due to their reluctance to spend during the crisis.

“In the short term, it’s really interesting to know that there will be a significant uptick in economic activity after this pandemic.”

When asked about the likelihood of inflation given the significant amount of federal funding the state has received, Gochnour said inflation has been difficult in the pandemic economy. She believes that this is not a cause for concern and rather fears rising prices on the commodity markets and speculation.
