Women’s volleyball swept by Hawaii

FULLERTON, California. – Cal State Fullerton’s women’s volleyball dropped to Hawaii in straight sets Friday night at Titan Gym.

Lyla Traylor led the Titan attack with nine kills and four digs, while Danille Jefferies added eight kills with a .438 clip and a block. Lolo Fonua had five kills and seven digs and Julia Crawford added three kills for the Titans.

As a team, the Titans recorded 28 kills on 98 attacks versus Hawaii’s 45 kills on 110 attacks. The Rainbow Wahine had a batting average of .318 in the match against the Titans’ .133.

Cal State Fullerton was strong early in the match, with kills from Fonua and Traylor giving the Titans an early 6-4 advantage. The Titans extended their lead to four, 10-6, on another Traylor kill and three by Jefferies. A 4-0 run in Hawaii later leveled the set at 11. The set stayed tight as Fonua pulled off another kill to put Hawaii at 16-15, but the Rainbow Wahine finished the set with a 9-3 run and grabbed a 1-0 game lead.

Hawaii opened the second set with a 4-1 run before a block from Jefferies and Schuster and a kill from Bianca Martinez put Cal State Fullerton 7-6 in a set. Martinez pulled off another kill, but a 5-0 run in Hawaii put the Titans in a 13-8 hole. Hawaii scored six of the next nine points to take a 19-11 lead. A Jefferies kill closed the Titans’ deficit, but a 4-0 run in Hawaii gave the Rainbow Wahine a 23-12 lead. A Jefferies kill sparked a 3-0 run by the Titans to level the score at 23-15, but Hawaii sealed the 25-17 set win.

A kill by Fonua on the line put Hawaii 6-5 early in the third set. However, the Rainbow Wahine capitalized on a 10-0 run to take a 16-5 lead. The Titans stayed on and scored four straight goals to reduce their deficit to eight, 19-11. Hawaii then sealed the set win 25-13 and the 3-0 match win.

The Titans are staying at home next weekend with games against CSUN on Friday, October 7th and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, October 8th. The first serve against CSUN is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PT.
