New state-of-the-art facility at the Academy for Creative Media at UH West Oahu

HONOLULU (KHON2) – The fastest growing degree program at the University of Hawaii West Oahu is the Bachelor of Arts for Creative Media, founded in 2019.

When they return in autumn, students at the Academy for Creative Media will have a new, ultra-modern facility to let their imaginations run wild.

$ 37 million was invested in the new facility for the Academy for Creative Media.

His focus is on creating and growing multimedia specialists for all forms of media.

“We currently have around 300 majors, around 260 majors, and we did our online and face-to-face learning until COVID in a small classroom,” says Sharla Hanaoka, director of the Academy for Creative Media at UH West Oahu.

“This facility will definitely give students more legroom and then the opportunity to study in industrial areas,” said Hanaoka.

There are state-of-the-art audio mixing rooms, esports arenas, an up-and-coming media lab and outdoor amphitheater, as well as an indoor theater in the facility.

“We wanted to build something that previously could only be found on the mainland and there is nothing for three people that you can find at USC or NYU or the American Film Institute that you can’t find here, because the whole goal is ours Keeping students here in Hawaii. not just through school, but with a meaningful job, ”says Chris Lee, director and founder of the Academy for Creative Media System.

From film production to social media to content creators, storytelling is one way to diversify Hawaii’s economy.

“The students themselves find value and a lot of them are on TikTok, Instagram, so they can see that the opportunities don’t just end in a traditional form of employment,” says Hanaoka.

“I think the youth are already here. Many of them are ahead of us and live comfortably in a virtual world, ”says Dr. Jeffrey Moniz, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at UH West Oahu.

“So it’s more about building the future,” said Moniz.

The University of Hawaii system starts the fall semester on August 23, 2021.
