Saint-Louis quarterback AJ Bianco, who signed for Hawaii before opting not to sign during the early signing phase in December, announced Wednesday that he has changed his commitment for Nevada.
The state’s top quarterback contender made the announcement on social media after practice at the Polynesian Bowl, where he is one of six quarterbacks set to play in Saturday’s high school All-Star Football game at Kamehameha’s Kunuiakea Stadium .
Bianco, who is listed as 6ft 4 and 220lbs, wrote on social media: “After speaking to my family and those close to me I have decided it is in my best interest to move on from to withdraw from the University of Hawaii.
“Hawaii is my home and it will always be my home, but I believe the University of Nevada offers me the best opportunity to succeed in both the classroom and the field. So I will commit to the University of Nevada. #GoPack.”
Arriving on Wednesday evening, Bianco said: “Signing day is in a few weeks and I have to make a decision soon. I can’t keep two teams waiting for me so I figured it would be best if I made a decision as early as possible so both teams know what they’re getting. It felt right and I’m thrilled.”
It’s another blow to a University of Hawaii football program that has been going through turmoil since the end of the regular season.
Todd Graham resigned last Friday after two seasons with the Warriors and the search for a new coach continues with the February recruitment deadline for Class of 2002 recruits just weeks away.
Bianco said the uncertain situation in Hawaii was a factor, but he cited the positive aspects of his ties to the Nevada coaching staff rather than the challenges Hawaii’s program faces.
“I’ve been in touch with Coach Nate Costa, the quarterbacks coach. I love his personality, his coaching style. He demands the best of you. He has worked with Justin Herbert (near Oregon). He was with Marcus (Mariota) and (Jeremiah) Masoli when he was there,” Bianco said.
Bianco, who also had offers from Washington State and Nebraska, is ranked the seventh best overall prospect from Hawaii in this class, according to 247 Sports.
Bianco finished his senior season with 2,660 passing yards and 26 touchdowns (11 rushing) in 10 games with eight picks.
