South Carolina imposes tough new restrictions on abortion

Gavin Jackson:

Well, it was definitely a unique day in the Chamber.

But first I want to start with how we got here, John. And that was now six weeks into our legislature. This bill was zoomed through the General Assembly. It was the first bill that went in the Senate, the first bill that went in the Senate and then had multiple hearings, went straight through committee, got into the Senate and went straight to the House of Representatives where they also had the same one Kind of a committee procedure, was done very quickly.

And here in the House, too, the issue was not to change this bill. Lawmakers wanted to get this to the governor’s desk as soon as possible. So, we saw some arguments on the floor yesterday among some Republicans, actually, a Republican legislator, a fringe Republican legislator who was a little upset because he wasn’t able to — table no amendments to this bill that would make the exceptions for Take out rape and incest because many Republican lawmakers want to go a little further with this bill.

But of course they wouldn’t have had the support for that. So that was kind of a compromise. And you heard the governor there say in that clip, hey, that’s the first step. We can continue. Of course, that step is still up in the air, depending on what’s going on in the courts at the time.

As you said, there is already a legal challenge. While abortions are currently temporarily halted in the state, the restraining order could be issued as early as tomorrow afternoon.
