The Infrastructure and Transportation Committee will meet on Monday at 9 a.m. to give presentations on nature-based wastewater solutions for South Maui and challenges related to traffic management on the road to Hāna.

Executive Director Paul Sturm of Ridge to Reefs and owner John Astilla of Sunshine Vetiver Solutions will unveil a pilot program that offers and tests cost-effective viable options for wastewater reuse that minimize environmental and coral reef impacts while complying with county regulations.

“With the return of tourism, there is an excess of R-1 sewage, which is the highest quality standard for water reuse,” said Councilor Yuki Lei Sugimura, chairman of the committee. “The Ridge to Reefs team is funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to test multiple scalable solutions that use biological processes to reuse or treat wastewater.”

These nature-based practices are inexpensive and low-maintenance, bind large amounts of CO2, consume minimal energy, and can be implemented as a quick fix, Sugimura said.

Also on the agenda of the meeting is a presentation by Volunteer Coordinator Napua Hueu of the Hāna Highway Regulation, an organization that works to “improve the safety and efficiency of the road to Hāna”.

“Increased visitor traffic along with two major road construction projects, parking problems and security issues have raised concerns among local residents,” said Sugimura. “I’ve invited community volunteers, the state Department of Transportation, the Maui Police Department, and the county government to discuss possible steps we can take to jointly address these issues.”
