Hawaii now marks the ninth day in a row with three-digit infections and, according to Lt. Gov. Josh Green today 233 new confirmed and probable coronavirus cases.

State health officials said Thursday the alarming surge in daily case numbers is the highly communicable Delta variant, as well as the community, which is mainly spread by unvaccinated people.

During a news conference Thursday, Hawaii Department of Health spokesman Brooks Baehr said the surge was due to widespread community transmission and encouraged unvaccinated people to get their vaccinations.

“We occasionally see people who have been vaccinated become infected, but the number of new cases we see are mostly unvaccinated,” said Baehr.

There are also 71 COVID-19 patients in Hawaiian hospitals and 1,634 active cases with a positivity rate of 4.06% and a 7-day average of 144.6 cases, Green told the Star Advertiser today.
