Driver license centers in Oahu will extend their hours starting July 1 to meet the growing demand for driver’s licenses, study permits, and government IDs.

“We hope that the extended weekday and Saturday hours will provide the convenience and extra boost needed to meet our goal of clearing the backlog caused by the pandemic by the end of the year,” said Nola Miyasaki, director of the urban customer services department, in a statement.

The Kapalama, Kapolei, Koolau, and Waianae driver license centers open at 7 a.m., an hour earlier than usual, for customers needing to renew their driver’s license. The centers will stay open Monday through Friday until 5 p.m., an hour later than usual, preferring customers who schedule appointments through the city’s AlohaQ reservation system.

Windward City, Hawaii Kai, and Downtown Satellite City Hall also open at 7 a.m. on weekdays for those who need to renew their licenses. They, along with the Pearlridge Satellite City Hall, will be open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to serve those renewing driver’s licenses, study permits, or IDs.

An estimated 73,384 driver’s licenses, study permits, and government ID cards are due to be renewed in Oahu between July 1 and the end of the year.

To meet demand, the centers and satellite town halls are relying on other operational changes, including stand-by services that allow seats to be filled in the event of no-shows and cancellations, and the provision of additional appointment slots for the next day at Kapalama and Kapolei driver licenses on working days between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Appointments can be made at www.AlohaQ.org.
