50 years ago – March 24, 1972

Calvin Lee takes over the helm of the St. Louis Football Post

Reverend William A. O’Connell, Principal of St. Louis High School, announced today the appointment of Calvin Lee as head varsity football coach.

Calvin, 25, follows his brother Tommy, 30, to the front of the grid. The appointment came just two weeks after Tommy Lee accepted the position of first assistant from Willamette University varsity football coach Joe Sheffield.

Calvin, a 1964 graduate of Kalani High School, joined the St. Louis faculty last fall as a physical education teacher. In addition to teaching, Lee supported his brother as an offense coach at varsity and coached the Saints’ Jayvee football team to an ILH championship.

Editor’s Note: Lee would go on to a long and distinguished career as a football coach at St. Louis as well as at the University of Hawaii.

25 years ago – March 21, 1997

Saipan visits Hawaii AGAPE

Five adults and five youth from Saipan recently traveled to Hawaii for an island-style AGAPE encounter at the St. Anthony Retreat Center in the Kalihi Valley. The visitors were so impressed with the local AGAPE team that they invited the entire group and Spiritual Director Maryknoll, Sister Grace Dorothy Lim, to Saipan for an AGAPE encounter and parents’ evening in April. More than 50 Leeward Oahu youth attended the weekend retreat. The highlight of the weekend was the exchange with the visiting AGAPE members from Saipan.

Filled with talent and nervousness, the St. Anthony Band made their way to Carnegie Hall

Members of the St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School Symphonic Band prepare for a big performance next year that will take them to a famous stage in the bright lights of a big city.

Band teacher Everett Yamashita recently announced that 42 music students from the Wailuku School will travel to New York to perform at the National Band and Orchestra Festival on April 1, 2013. The band will play at historic Carnegie Hall, where they will be judged by a panel of distinguished university and college music professionals. …
