PacWhale Eco-Adventures welcomes new eco-friendly ship

PacWhale Eco-Adventures welcomed a new custom built ship, the Legacy of the Ocean added to its fleet on Thursday with a Hawaiian blessing event.

The markThe new building “offers innovative sustainability features that promise to revolutionize whale watching and other marine tourism excursions,” according to an announcement by the organization.

Custom-built for PacWhale, the ship features a variety of eco-friendly additions, including:

  • Solar-charged house batteries.
  • Dedicated tanks to capture “grey water” from onboard sinks and dishwashers, eliminating the commercially accepted practice of dumping chemically contaminated used water into the ocean.
  • Continuous LED lighting that reduces the need for electricity from petroleum-fired sources.
  • Permanent cup holders to securely hold reusable cups until placed in an on-board dishwasher.
  • EPA Tier 3 compliant engines.
  • ADA compliant boarding and head (bathroom) access for mobility-impaired passengers.

PacWhale Eco-Adventures is a for-profit, social enterprise wholly owned and benefited by the Pacific Whale Foundation, a non-profit marine conservation organization.
