DOT Press Release: PRELIMINARY YEAR-END DATA ON HAWAII ROAD DEATHS FOR 2021
Posted on February 10, 2022 in Latest Department News, Newsroom
HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) reports 94 traffic-related fatalities on Hawaii’s roads in 2021 as a result of 94 accidents. These numbers are higher than 2020 (85 deaths), when nationwide road fatalities tended to increase, but lower than the 108 deaths recorded for 2019.
Drinking and driving, speed and distraction were the leading causes of Hawaii traffic fatalities in 2021. This trend continues into early 2022, with preliminary data showing the majority of the 16 fatalities for the month of January (as of this writing), resulting from illegal and avoidable behavior on the road. Road users continue to put themselves and others at risk through these actions.
“I want to stop talking about deaths as numbers and start talking about how we can save lives by doing something as simple as obeying the law,” said Ed Sniffen, deputy director of the Hawaii Department of Transportation. “That’s why we’re targeting strategies like elevated crosswalks and roundabouts that reduce speed in corridors to minimize the risk of fatalities if someone messes up. The faster the accident vehicle is traveling, the lower the probability that the victim will survive. 9 in 10 people hit by a car at 20mph will survive – double the speed to 40mph and only 1 in 10 survives.”
HDOT’s road safety strategy is consistent with the Federal Highways Administration’s (FHWA) Safe System approach, which sets the goal of zero traffic fatalities. To learn more about the strategies that HDOT and its road safety partners are implementing, visit the following websites:
Preliminary road fatalities are subject to change based on the results of medical or other reports of recent motor vehicle accidents. Should the death toll change, HDOT will issue an update to this press release.
