HONOLULU – The search for a missing 6-year-old girl resumed Wednesday, last seen sleeping at her home in Oahu.
Isabella Kalua was last seen sleeping in her room in Waimanalo near the east end of Oahu at around 9 p.m. on Sunday, Honolulu police said.
The police described the brown-eyed, brown-haired girl as white and multiracial. Police believe she was wearing a black hoodie, black leggings, colorful socks and Nike slippers with pink bottoms.
“Your family and friends are concerned about their safety and well-being,” said a Honolulu CrimeStoppers press release.
Volunteers and authorities have been looking since Monday.
Interim Police Chief Rade Vanic informed the Honolulu Police Commission of the search on Wednesday. “At this point, we … do not have sufficient evidence that the child was abducted,” he said.
Isabella had lived with the Kaluas for four years, and at some point last year the Kaluas adopted her and changed her name, Alena Kaeo, a cousin of Isabella’s birth mother, told the Honolulu Star Advertiser.
Isabella’s birth mother, Melanie Joseph, told the newspaper that she last saw her daughter about a year ago on a scheduled visit.
“It was devastating, really devastating,” Kiara Galdeira, another biological aunt, told Hawaii News Now. “We just wish we could have done more. And we just want her at home. I don’t think she would ever run away. “
“Piles of volunteers from Waimanalo and beyond” were searched along with dozens of police officers and first responders, police said.
They searched neighborhoods, beaches and parks on foot and by air on Tuesday, police said.
“It is obvious that she comes from a caring family and community and we hope that we will find her soon and find her safe,” said Vanic. “At this point, we ask neighbors to check their yards and properties for places where a small child could go or hide.
