Maui County Council is currently considering a bill to limit short-term rental housing.

While this is a step in the right direction, they should go a step further and consider a bill repealing the regulation that allows them.

STRHs are a direct cause of excessive tourism in Maui. 800 are already allowed, 400 approved.

Are you wondering why our streets and beaches are crowded? Why were our special quiet places invaded? Bingo.

STRHs have no amenities. Your guests will find their amenities on our beaches, hiking trails, picturesque open spaces and yes, the road to Hana.

Their loud celebrations infuriate their neighbors. Their owners are away from home and have agents to handle complaints. Neighborhood disputes are the result.

We collect all of these taxes, proponents argue, but the impact on our infrastructure, including roads, highways, bridges, beach access, and housing, far outweighs their tax contributions.

Why should a few make so much money at the expense of their neighbors? How long should this entitlement exist? It shouldn’t take forever. It should be phased out.

Bed and breakfasts can do everything STRHs do, and better. The owners live there and respond directly to complaints from neighbors.

Repeal the STRH regulation and significantly increase the penalty for illegal STRHs.

Enforce the penalties. This will lead to a more controlled and sustainable visitor industry.
