7 people in Honolulu injured by the falling branch of a huge tree

HONOLULU (AP) – At least seven people were injured in the collapse of a large tree branch in the Waikiki neighborhood of Honolulu on Saturday, Hawaii News Now reported.

A large branch of a banyan tree fell around 12:15 p.m. in the Hilton Hawaiian Village in the heart of the popular tourist district, the Honolulu Emergency Medical Service told Hawaii News Now.

The seven people who sustained multiple injuries included those with severe head injuries and multiple cuts. Four of the seven patients were treated and transported to a nearby hospital, Honolulu EMS said.

Those seriously injured included a 50-year-old man, a 22-year-old woman, a 28-year-old woman, and another woman whose ages were not disclosed, Hawaii News Now reported.

The other three who were examined on site refused to be transported.

The banyan reaches a height of up to 30 meters and spreads out indefinitely to the side.

Hilton Hawaiian Village, a large resort on famous Waikiki Beach, issued a statement following the incident which said, “Our thoughts go with those affected and their families. Our hotel team and several guests reacted immediately and contacted the responsible authorities. The well-being and safety of our guests and team members are of the utmost importance. “
