Hawaii sees 280 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 76,191 nationwide

Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported 280 new confirmed and probable coronavirus infections, bringing the state’s total since the pandemic started to 76,191.

No new virus-related deaths were reported today, so the nationwide death toll from COVID-19 remains 714.

The state’s official coronavirus-related death toll includes 542 deaths in Oahu, 82 in Maui, 76 in Hawaii, eight in Kauai, one in Molokai, and five Hawaiian residents who died outside the state.

The US coronavirus-related death toll is over 676,000 today and the nationwide number of infections is more than 42.3 million.

Today’s new confirmed and probable infection count by island includes 197 new cases in Oahu, 21 in Maui, 39 in Hawaii, 16 in Kauai, one in Molokai, and six Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

State health officials have added likely infections to the total number of cases. Likely infections include people who have never received a confirmatory test, but who are believed to have had the virus based on their known exposure and symptoms, or a positive antigen test.

The total number of confirmed and probable coronavirus cases by island since the outbreak began is 53,133 in Oahu, 8,771 in Maui, 9,550 in Hawaii County, 2,045 in Kauai, 139 in Lanai and 203 in Molokai. There are also 2,350 Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

The statistics released today reflect the new cases of infection reported to the department on Sunday.

Health officials also said today that out of the total number of infections in the state, 7,197 cases were considered active. Officials say they consider the infections reported in the past 14 days to be a “proxy number for active cases.” The state’s total number of active cases is down by 234 today.

By Island, Oahu has 4,915 active cases, Big Island has 1,122, Maui has 662, Kauai has 455, Lanai has five, and Molokai has 38.

The latest COVID-19 vaccine round-up from Hawaii says 1,968,774 doses of vaccine had been administered through state and federal distribution programs as of Sunday, 3,798 more than the previous day. Health officials say 66.6% of the state’s population are now fully vaccinated and 75.1% have received at least one dose.

Of all confirmed cases of Hawaii infection, 4,089 had to be hospitalized, with 21 new hospital admissions reported today.

Nineteen hospitalizations in the total statewide are residents of Hawaii who have been diagnosed and treated outside of the state. Of the 4,070 hospital admissions within the state, 3,282 were in Oahu, 457 in Maui, 286 in the Big Island, 37 in Kauai, five on Lanai, and three on Molokai.

The average seven-day case number for Oahu is 318 and the average positivity rate for seven days is 6.3%, state health officials said today.
