Hawaii sees 240 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 78,644 nationwide

Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported 240 new confirmed and probable coronavirus infections, bringing the state’s total to 78,644 cases since the pandemic began.

No new virus-related deaths were reported today, so the nationwide death toll from COVID-19 remains at 757.

The state’s official coronavirus-related death toll includes 573 deaths in Oahu, 84 in Maui, 86 in Hawaii, eight in Kauai, one in Molokai, and five Hawaiian residents who died outside of the state.

The U.S. coronavirus-related death toll is over 691,000 today and the nationwide number of infections is more than 43.1 million.

Today’s new confirmed and probable infection count by island includes 193 new cases in Oahu, 12 in Maui, 24 in Hawaii, 8 in Kauai, and three Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

State health officials have added likely infections to the total number of cases. Likely infections include people who have never received a confirmatory test, but who are believed to have had the virus based on their known exposure and symptoms, or a positive antigen test.

The total number of confirmed and probable coronavirus cases by island since the outbreak began is 54,734 in Oahu, 9,012 in Maui, 9,913 in Hawaii County, 2,223 in Kauai, 139 in Lanai and 222 in Molokai. There are also 2,401 Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

Health officials also said today that out of the total number of infections in the state, 5,631 cases were considered active. Officials say they consider the infections reported in the past 14 days to be a “proxy number for active cases.” The state’s total number of active cases is down by 157 today.

By island, Oahu has 3,834 active cases, Big Island has 859, Maui has 493, Kauai has 409, Lanai has two, and Molokai has 34.

The latest COVID-19 vaccine round-up from Hawaii states that 2,00,996 vaccine doses were administered through state and federal distribution programs as of Monday, 3,147 more than the previous day. Health officials say 67.8% of the state’s population is now fully vaccinated and 76% have received at least one dose.

Of all confirmed cases of infection in Hawaii, 4,273 had to be hospitalized, with 24 new hospital admissions reported today.

Twenty hospitalizations in the total statewide are residents of Hawaii who have been diagnosed and treated outside of the state. Of the 4,253 hospital admissions in the state, 3,406 were in Oahu, 471 in Maui, 325 in the Big Island, 43 in Kauai, five on Lanai, and three on Molokai.

The average seven-day case number for Oahu is 227 and the average positivity rate for seven days is 4.5%, state health officials said today.
