Hawaii sees 63 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 38,544 nationwide

Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported 63 new confirmed and probable coronavirus infections, bringing the state’s total since the pandemic started to 38,544.

No new virus-related deaths were reported today, so the nationwide death toll from COVID-19 remains at 521.

The state’s official coronavirus-related death toll includes 404 deaths in Oahu, 57 in Maui, 55 in Hawaii, two in Kauai, and three Hawaiian residents who died outside of the state.

The U.S. coronavirus-related death toll is over 606,000 today and the nationwide number of infections is more than 33.8 million.

Today’s new confirmed and probable infection count by island includes 28 new cases in Oahu, six in Maui, 15 in the island of Hawaii, seven in Kauai, and seven Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

State health officials have added likely infections to the total number of cases. Likely infections include people who have never received a confirmatory test, but who are believed to have had the virus based on their known exposure and symptoms, or a positive antigen test.

The total number of confirmed and probable coronavirus cases by island since the outbreak began is 28,339 in Oahu, 4,755 in Maui, 3,368 in Hawaii County, 424 in Kauai, 115 in Lanai and 80 in Molokai. There are also 1,463 Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

Infections likely since the pandemic began today include 827 in Maui, 819 in Oahu, 73 in Hawaii, 24 in Molokai, three in Kauai, three in Lanai, and 59 residents diagnosed outside of the state.

The statistics released today reflect the new cases of infection reported to the department on Saturday.

Health officials also said today that of the total number of infections in the state, 749 cases were considered active. Officials say they consider the infections reported in the past 14 days to be a “proxy number for active cases.” The state’s total number of active cases is up 35 today.

By island, Oahu has 46 active cases, Big Island has 18, Maui has 10, and Kauai has 28.

Health officials counted 2,501 new COVID-19 test results on today’s balance sheet, corresponding to a nationwide positivity rate of 2.52%. According to the Hawaii COVID-19 Data Dashboard, the state’s average positivity rate over 7 days is 2.3%.

The latest COVID-19 vaccine round-up from Hawaii states that 1,714,937 vaccine doses were given through state and federal distribution programs as of Sunday, up from 5,725 more than two days earlier. Health officials say 58.6% of the state’s population are now fully vaccinated and 65.4% have received at least one dose.

Of all confirmed cases of infection in Hawaii, 2,527 had to be hospitalized, with three new hospitalizations reported today.

According to the latest information from the department’s Hawaii COVID-19 Data Dashboard, a total of 52 patients with the virus have been in hospitals in Hawaii to date, with 11 in intensive care units and eight on ventilators.

The average seven-day case number for Oahu is 39 and the average positivity rate for seven days is 2.3%, state health officials said today.
