Hawaii sees 7 new coronavirus-related deaths, 168 additional infections

Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported seven new coronavirus-related deaths and 168 new confirmed and probable infections across the state, bringing the state’s total since the pandemic started to 818 deaths and 80,582 cases.

Five of the most recent deaths have occurred in Oahu and two in the Big Island. No further information was initially available on the most recent deaths.

The state’s official coronavirus-related death toll includes 620 deaths on Oahu, 88 in Maui, 96 in Hawaii, eight in Kauai, one in Molokai and five Hawaiian residents who died outside the state.

The U.S. coronavirus-related death toll is over 705,000 today and the nationwide number of infections is more than 43.9 million.

Today’s new confirmed and probable infection count by island includes 100 new cases in Oahu, 18 in Maui, 34 in Hawaii, 11 in Kauai, one in Molokai, and four Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

State health officials have added likely infections to the total number of cases. Likely infections include people who have never received a confirmatory test, but who are believed to have had the virus based on their known exposure and symptoms, or a positive antigen test.

The total number of confirmed and probable coronavirus cases by island since the outbreak began is 55,921 in Oahu, 9,192 in Maui, 10,298 in Hawaii County, 2,345 in Kauai, 139 in Lanai and 232 in Molokai. There are also 2,455 Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

Health officials also said today that of the total number of infections in the state, 3,883 cases were considered active. Officials say they consider the infections reported in the past 14 days to be a “proxy number for active cases.” The state’s total number of active cases is down by 152 today.

By island, Oahu has 2,555 active cases, Big Island has 708, Maui has 329, Kauai has 268, and Molokai has 23.

The latest COVID-19 vaccine round-up from Hawaii says 2,051,164 vaccine doses had been administered through state and federal distribution programs as of Tuesday, 8,008 more than the previous day. Health officials say 69% of the state’s population are now fully vaccinated and 77.1% have received at least one dose.

Of all confirmed cases of infection in Hawaii, 4,422 hospital admissions had to be completed, with 28 new hospital admissions reported today.

Twenty hospitalizations in the total statewide are residents of Hawaii who have been diagnosed and treated outside of the state. Of the 4,402 hospital stays in the state, 3,510 were on Oahu, 489 on Maui, 340 on the Big Island, 54 on Kauai, five on Lanai, and four on Molokai.

The average seven-day case number for Oahu is 100 and the average positivity rate for seven days is 3.3%, state health officials said today.
