Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported 12 new coronavirus-related deaths and 332 new confirmed and probable infections nationwide, bringing the state’s total to 782 deaths and 79,206 cases since the pandemic began.

There were ten dead on Oahu and two on the island of Hawaii. Their ages ranged from one man in their thirties and two women in their forties to four people in their eighties. Three people died at home while the rest were hospitalized; all but two of the victims also had underlying illnesses, according to the state health authorities.

In total, the state reported 193 deaths related to COVID in September, Hawaii’s deadliest month in the pandemic by far. The September deaths propelled by the highly contagious Delta variant account for nearly 25% of the state’s total virus death toll.

The state’s official coronavirus-related death toll includes 592 deaths on Oahu, 90 on the island of Hawaii, 86 in Maui, eight in Kauai, one in Molokai, and five Hawaiian residents who died outside the state.

Today’s new confirmed and probable infection count by island includes 220 new cases in Oahu, 56 in Hawaii, 30 in Maui, 19 in Kauai, two in Molokai, and five Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

State health officials have added likely infections to the total number of cases. Likely infections include people who have never received a confirmatory test, but who are believed to have had the virus based on their known exposure and symptoms, or a positive antigen test. Today’s balance shows cases of infection that were reported to the health department on Tuesday.

The total number of confirmed and probable coronavirus cases by island since the outbreak began is 55,098 in Oahu, 10,006 in Hawaii County, 9,060 in Maui, 2,255 in Kauai, 226 in Molokai and 139 in Lanai. There are also 2,422 Hawaiian residents diagnosed outside of the state.

Health officials also said today that out of the total number of infections in the state, 5,130 cases were considered active. Officials say they consider the infections reported in the past 14 days to be a “proxy number for active cases.” The state’s total number of active cases is down by 258 today.

By island, Oahu has 3,470 active cases, Big Island has 787, Maui has 450, Kauai has 385, Molokai has 36, and Lanai has two.

Health officials say 67.9% of the state’s population is fully vaccinated and 76.1% received at least one dose; and 20,913 booster syringes or third doses for the immunocompromised were administered.

Of all confirmed cases of Hawaii infection, 4,310 had to be hospitalized with no new hospital admissions reported today.
